For this reason, some people argue that schools should replace certain academic subjects with practical life skills. I partly agree: these skills deserve a regular place in the timetable, but they should be added alongside academic subjects rather than instead of them.

There are strong reasons to teach practical skills at school. Young people today face financial decisions much earlier than their parents did, from mobile phone contracts to student loans and online shopping on credit. A short course on budgeting, interest and saving could prevent many of them from falling into debt. Similarly, basic cooking lessons would help teenagers eat more healthily once they leave home, which could reduce the number of young adults who rely on fast food.

However, removing academic subjects to make room for these lessons would be a mistake. Subjects such as maths, science and languages develop the reasoning and communication skills that most careers require, and they keep options open for students who have not yet decided what they want to do. Moreover, many practical skills can be built into existing lessons. Maths classes, for example, can use real bank statements and shopping bills, while biology can include nutrition and the basics of a healthy diet.

In conclusion, I agree that schools should prepare students for everyday adult life, but not at the expense of academic learning. The most effective approach is to combine the two, so that students leave school with both knowledge and the practical skills to use it.

Why this essay works

The writer takes a clear position, partly agreeing, and keeps it from the introduction to the conclusion. Some people believe higher education should be free for everyone, while others think students should contribute to the cost of their own studies. In my opinion, tuition should be free, but students who can afford it should help to pay their living costs.

Those who support free university education argue that it gives everyone the same opportunities. When students have to pay high fees, talented young people from poorer families may decide not to apply, or they may choose a shorter, cheaper course instead of the one that suits them. A society also benefits as a whole from having more doctors, engineers and teachers, so it is reasonable for everyone to share the cost through taxes.

On the other hand, people who believe students should pay point out that graduates usually earn more than non-graduates over their lifetime. From this point of view, it seems unfair that a factory worker’s taxes should pay for the degree of a future lawyer. Paying something may also make students take their studies more seriously, and it allows universities to spend more on teaching and facilities without relying entirely on the government.

In conclusion, both views have merit. I believe tuition should be free so that ability, not family income, decides who studies, but students should cover part of their living costs through part-time work, loans or grants based on need. This balance keeps university open to all while sharing the cost more fairly.

Why this essay works

Each view has its own paragraph with a reason and an example, so the discussion is balanced, and the opinion appears in the introduction and is explained in the conclusion.
