While this brings some real risks, I believe the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages, as long as users take basic precautions.

The main benefit is convenience. Tasks that once required a trip into town, such as paying bills, transferring money or buying a train ticket, can now be completed in a few seconds from anywhere. This saves a great deal of time, especially for people who work long hours or live far from shops and banks. Smartphones have also made communication cheaper and faster: a video call to a relative on another continent costs almost nothing, and messages arrive instantly.

On the other hand, relying on one device creates new problems. If a phone is lost or stolen, the owner may lose access to their money and contacts at the same time, and criminals may be able to use their accounts. Online fraud is also increasing, and older or less experienced users are often its victims. In addition, some people find that constant access to shops and social media encourages them to spend more money and time than they intended.

In conclusion, using a smartphone for shopping, banking and communication has some drawbacks, particularly in terms of security. However, most of these can be reduced with strong passwords, two-step verification and a little common sense, whereas the time and money saved benefit almost everyone. For this reason, I believe the advantages are greater.

Why this essay works

The introduction answers the question directly, and the conclusion explains why the advantages win: the disadvantages can be reduced, the benefits cannot be replaced. This situation causes both practical and social problems, but there are several ways in which families, companies and governments can help.

The most obvious problem is practical. When banks close local branches and doctors’ appointments can only be booked through an app, older people who cannot use these services may struggle to manage their money or their health. Some have to depend on relatives for simple tasks, which can make them feel embarrassed and less independent. A second problem is loneliness. Families and friends increasingly keep in touch through messaging apps and video calls, so older people without these skills may hear from their loved ones less often.

These problems can be tackled in several ways. Firstly, local libraries and community centres could offer free, patient classes in which older learners practise basic skills, such as making a video call or paying a bill online, at their own pace. Secondly, companies should design apps with larger text and simpler menus, and keep a telephone or face-to-face option for customers who need it. Finally, younger family members can play an important role by teaching one new skill at a time, rather than simply doing the task for their parents or grandparents.

In conclusion, the digital gap between generations can limit older people’s independence and increase loneliness. With accessible training, simpler technology and support from families, however, this gap can be narrowed considerably.

Why this essay works

The body paragraphs follow the two parts of the question, problems first and solutions second, and each solution names who should act. Look at how the grammar supports this:

What the writer does

Example from the essay

Why it raises the score

Passive when the “doer” is unclear

people who are not confident with technology are increasingly left behind

The passive focuses on the people affected: Grammatical Range.

Passive modal

doctors’ appointments can only be booked through an app

Describes a situation precisely and formally.

Which referring to a whole idea

which can make them feel embarrassed and less independent

Adds a consequence without starting a new sentence.

Sequencing words for solutions

Firstly, … Secondly, … Finally, …

Coherence and Cohesion: the reader can follow three solutions easily.

Should for recommendations

companies should design apps with larger text and simpler menus

The natural way to propose a solution in English.

Rather than + -ing

rather than simply doing the task for their parents or grandparents

Compares two actions in one sentence.

Topic collocations

close local branches, keep in touch, at their own pace, narrow the gap

Lexical Resource: natural phrases that fit the topic.

Learn more in the problem and solution essay guide.

<ins class="adsbygoogle ad-responsive-1"
     style="display:block"
     data-ad-client="ca-pub-1256780356303841"
     data-ad-slot="7844857892"></ins>

Ideas for common technology arguments

Not sure what to write?
