The examiner does not know who you are. They only see your essay and mark it against the official band descriptors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is true for both the paper-based and the computer-delivered test. Writing is never marked by a computer program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"criteria\">The four marking criteria<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your Task&nbsp;2 essay gets a band from 0 to 9 for each of four criteria. The examiner checks whether you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"list--4\">\n<li class=\"bullet\">answer <strong>all parts<\/strong> of the question (for example both the causes and the solutions)<\/li>\n<li class=\"bullet\">give a <strong>clear opinion<\/strong> when the question asks for one, and keep it consistent from introduction to conclusion<\/li>\n<li class=\"bullet\"><strong>develop<\/strong> your main ideas with explanations and examples, rather than just listing them<\/li>\n<li class=\"bullet\">write <strong>at least 250 words<\/strong>; shorter essays are penalised<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An essay that is well written but does not answer the exact question can score very low. A clear structure is usually four or five paragraphs: an introduction, two or three body paragraphs and a conclusion. Each body paragraph should start with a topic sentence and focus on one main idea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/ieltsleader.com\/useful-resources\/linking-words\">Linking words<\/a> such as &#8220;however&#8221;, &#8220;as a result&#8221; and &#8220;for example&#8221; help, but they need to be used accurately and not too often. Overusing them, or starting every sentence with one, can actually lower your score.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"lexical\">Lexical Resource: your vocabulary<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To reach band&nbsp;7, you need to show a range of vocabulary that lets you express ideas precisely, including some less common words and natural collocations, such as &#8220;a growing concern&#8221; or &#8220;to tackle a problem&#8221;. Repeating the same words, choosing the wrong word or making many spelling mistakes holds this score down. Using a long word incorrectly is worse than using a simple word correctly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"grammar\">Grammatical Range and Accuracy: your grammar<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The examiner checks both range and accuracy. Range means using different sentence structures, for example sentences with &#8220;although&#8221;, &#8220;which&#8221; or conditionals. Accuracy means how many of your sentences are free of errors. For band&nbsp;7 and above, most of your sentences should be error-free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"takeaway\">\n<span class=\"takeaway__label\">Key takeaway<\/span>\n<p class=\"takeaway__text\">All four criteria are equal. A candidate with excellent grammar and vocabulary but weak Task Response will rarely score above 6. Balance matters more than perfection in one area.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"band-calculation\">How your Writing band score is calculated<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your Task&nbsp;2 score is the average of the four criteria. Your overall Writing band then combines Task&nbsp;1 and Task&nbsp;2, but <strong>Task&nbsp;2 counts twice as much as Task&nbsp;1<\/strong>. That is why it is worth spending about 40 of your 60 minutes on Task&nbsp;2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The examiner also does not count text copied from the question, and memorised material is not credited. So never copy the question into your introduction word for word; paraphrase it instead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"check-yourself\">How to check your own essay before the exam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"steps\">\n<li><strong>Task<\/strong> Have I answered every part of the question and given a clear opinion?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Structure<\/strong> Does each paragraph have one main idea and a clear topic sentence?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Development<\/strong> Have I explained and supported each idea with an example?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Language<\/strong> Have I avoided repeating the same words? Are my complex sentences correct?<\/li>\n<li><strong>Length<\/strong> Is the essay at least 250 words?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Checking your own work helps, but it is hard to see your own mistakes.
