Pick a common topic, such as home, work, hobbies or travel, and talk about it out loud for two minutes: while cooking, walking the dog or on your way to work.

A simple trick: write topics on sticky notes, pick one at random and start speaking without preparation. That is exactly what the real test feels like.

Record yourself and listen back

Record a two-minute Part 2 answer on your phone. When you listen back, you will immediately notice long pauses, repeated words like “very” and “good”, and grammar mistakes you did not hear while speaking. Then record the same answer again and compare.

Learn topic vocabulary and collocations

Examiners reward natural word combinations rather than rare, long words. Instead of “a very good trip”, say “a once-in-a-lifetime trip”; instead of “I like it very much”, say “I’m really into it”. Learn vocabulary by topic, with example sentences. Our Part 2 cue cards with answers include a vocabulary table for each topic, and you will find more in useful phrases for IELTS Speaking.

Use linking words, but naturally

Linking words make your answers easier to follow and show coherence. Spoken English uses different linkers from essays:

To add a point: “On top of that…”, “What’s more…”

To give an example: “For instance…”, “Take my brother, for example…”

To contrast: “Having said that…”, “On the other hand…”

To give your opinion: “If you ask me…”, “I’d say that…”

Avoid essay phrases such as “Furthermore” or “In conclusion” in Speaking. They sound unnatural in a conversation.

Buy time without going silent

Everyone gets questions they have never thought about. In Part 3 the examiner can also rephrase the question.

Don’t memorise answers, but do prepare ideas

Examiners are trained to spot memorised answers, and they can lower your score for them. Instead, prepare ideas and personal stories you can adapt to many topics. A story about a trip, for example, can answer questions about travel, a happy memory, a time you learned something or a place you would like to visit again.

Your answers do not have to be true. The examiner assesses your English, not the facts, so if you have no real example, invent one. Just make sure you still answer the question on the card.

Common mistakes that keep you at band 6

Speaking too fast. Rushing leads to mistakes and makes you run out of ideas.
