IELTS Writing Task 2 topics: FAQ

Quick answers to the questions people ask most.

What are the most common IELTS Writing Task 2 topics?

Education, technology, the environment, health, work, crime, the media and family life appear very often. Government spending, tourism, sport and culture are also common. The questions are always new, but they are usually about one of these broad areas.

Can I find out the topic before the exam?

No. The question is different in every test and is not published in advance. Lists of “recent questions” online are based on what candidates remember, so use them for practice, not to predict your test.

Should I memorise essays for each topic?

No. Examiners notice memorised language, and a memorised essay rarely answers the exact question, which lowers your Task Response score. Learn ideas, examples and topic vocabulary instead.

What if I know nothing about the topic?

You do not need expert knowledge. The examiner checks your English and how well you answer the question, not your facts. Use simple, everyday examples from your own experience or your country.

Are the topics the same in Academic and General Training?

The topics are similar and the task is the same: an essay of at least 250 words in about 40 minutes. General Training questions are sometimes about more everyday situations.
